How Great Culture Helped Admiral Group Become an £8 Billion Business

Admiral Colleagues
10 December 2024

For over two decades, Admiral Group has partnered with Great Place To Work to measure and invest in their workplace culture.

Admiral was launched in 1993, with only one brand and 57 colleagues, and was built from the ground up. They chose to do things differently - happy to embrace innovation, new technology, new ways of working, and to take risks.

They put customers at the heart of what they did and believed in the power of the team. In 2004, Admiral floated on the London Stock Exchange, and in 2007 became, and still is, the only FTSE 100 company headquartered in Wales.

Primarily an insurance provider, offering motor, home, travel and pet insurance, the company also has Insurtech propositions like Veygo, personal loans through Admiral Money, and legal services through Admiral Law.

Prioritising a great culture

Since conception, Admiral's people have been a priority which is showcased by their incredible company culture and their ‘Share In Our Future’ commitment, with all colleagues receiving shares in the company twice a year.

Surpassing the benchmark required for Great Place To Work Certification™ by 20 percentage points on average, over the last two decades, Admiral has been ranked a UK’s Best Workplace™ every year since the List was first published in 2001. They are one of only two companies to have achieved this milestone in the UK.

Their incredible company culture has resulted in impressive global recognition too, including the Top 25 World’s Best Workplaces™ in 2024, and achieving Certification in 7 countries and Best Workplaces national recognition in 6 countries in the same year.

Admiral's commitment to its people has been unwavering – even in times of crisis. When the global Covid-19 pandemic hit in 2020, Admiral employees were still paid their full salary, and the group set up a £6m support fund which predominantly provided funding for charities and community projects in South Wales.

Despite the challenges of 2022 (such as the Ukrainian-Russian war leading to high inflation and FCA pricing reforms), the group continued to grow overall, strongly in places, and had become increasingly diversified. Employee engagement scores remained at or above pre-pandemic levels and Best Workplaces rankings continued to be industry-leading.

“We remain well-positioned for continued financial success,” says Milena Mondini de Focatiis, Admiral Group CEO. “This is the 24th consecutive year we’ve been recognised by Great Place to Work in the UK. This is testament to our colleagues and our very special culture. We believe that people who like what they do, do it better. Because of their hard work, they have been an instrumental part of our financial strength and our success so far.”

The ROI of great company culture

It’s no coincidence that Admiral’s commitment to being a Best Workplace has gone hand in hand with its rise to the top tier of its sector.

Research by the London Business School’s Dr Alex Edmans shows that the UK’s Best Workplaces perform more than four times better than the market overall. That’s the equivalent of a return of 1,047% (for a value-weighted portfolio) compared to just 231% for the FTSE All- Share compared over a similar period.

Workplaces with a thriving company culture enjoy higher retention rates, increased productivity and faster innovation, among other benefits.

All of these are key to business success, and Admiral's story demonstrates what the data proves: culture matters. Organisations that genuinely focus on building themselves around their people outperform those that do not.
