About us

Alchemy Technology Services was founded in September 2018 as a global centre of excellence for insurance software implementation and support services. We work with insurance companies, system integrators and software providers to support the digitisation of the global insurance industry. 

Recognising the need for skilled, certified, experienced resources for the digitisation of the insurance industry, Alchemy’s founder and CEO set out to create Alchemy in his hometown of Derry/Londonderry, Northern Ireland to support the socio-economic growth of the region. Since our launch we have grown from 2 employees to 109, providing long lasting, fulfilling careers for the people of the region.

My role has developed exponentially since joining Alchemy, starting as a junior Technical Analyst I moved up to Implementation Lead within two years. I have a client facing role and am responsible for not just implementing software but building strong relationships with clients and helping to grow Alchemy’s reputation within the commercial insurance market. 

The trust Alchemy have in you to make the right decision makes it stand out from other companies. Management do not micro manage, if they believe you are capable you will be given an opportunity. 

My favourite things about working at Alchemy is firstly, the rate and speed of progression. And secondly, the social events (pre-covid!).

Getting out of your comfort zone and challenging yourself is the best way to achieve. It may feel very uncomfortable at the time, but Alchemy gives you the support needed to allow you to succeed.

What defines us

From our employees' first day with us, we focus on culture, our culture is what is most important to us. We introduce change management techniques and approaches which can be applied to any situation. We introduce coaching and mentoring with each new recruit provided a mentor on their first day with us. 

Our people learn and grow in a safe environment where they are free to make mistakes and learn from each other. The training and access to ongoing learning we provide to our people is industry leading.

We have a flat structure with no middle management and we have an open and transparent approach to progression.

What inspires us

Alchemy has developed a system of progression which is open and transparent. What makes it different from traditional promotion processes is that there is no limit on the number of people who can be promoted at any time. Very simply, if you make the grade you get the reward, and this is a win-win for our people and the business. 

We hold regular Promotion Board Panels throughout the year. Employees put a business case forward, preparing a pitch that outlines how they have developed and grown, their achievements and the reasons why they believe they deserve a promotion. They must tell the Panel about their accomplishments, describe their contributions and how they can further add value by being promoted to a higher level. 

If the panel feels the employee has not met the criteria for promotion, comprehensive feedback is provided and they are invited back to the next quarter’s panel, they do not need to wait a full year. Each progression level comes with a 25-50% salary increase.

As a company with a flat structure and no line managers, our Mentoring Programme plays a key role in helping to develop and support our people. 

The Mentoring Programme provides all of our people with an opportunity to help and support the next wave of Academy employees. Each new employee is paired with a Mentor on day one. The Mentor checks in daily throughout initial training and is on hand to support and discuss anything the Mentee needs from technical help to the Alchemy culture. They then continue the Mentor/Mentee relationship throughout their career at Alchemy.

We bring in an external coach who trains our Mentors in professional coaching and remains on hand for help and advice.

Not only does the mentee benefit from having a direct contact who has been in their position not too long ago, offering advice and support, the mentor has an opportunity to grow their coaching skills, professional development and also their confidence.

Application tips

When we recruit, we are not necessarily looking for someone who is top of the class. We look at the individual’s attributions and ask “What can this person bring? Are they the right fit?”. 

Our people work together, they help, support and share knowledge with each other while being able to see the bigger picture of how this benefits the company as a whole, their projects and themselves. 

  1. Give us a fully rounded picture of who you are. Perhaps your undergrad wasn't in a technical discipline, maybe it took a few years to decide what your passion in life was. Tell us about what you did before, how you learned from those experiences and how it benefits you now.
