What employees say

I enjoy the culture of open communication on how the company is performing, and the collaboration that we enjoy as a team. The leadership is honest and approachable with a clear vision and identity. Above all it’s the fun atmosphere and environment that makes it a great place for me. I am lucky enough to work with people who show true emotional commitment to our company – you just can’t buy that!

What defines us

A happy workplace is a successful workplace. We are lucky enough to have an MD and managers who really believe in this. So creating an environment that is a fun place to work, where people can grow and achieve both personal and career goals is a strategic priority for us.

We are proud of how we encourage and value diversity coupled with our culture of team work and supporting one another through difficult times. Caring isn’t just something we do, it’s part of who we are, and this shines through right across our business both on a customer level and how we work internally.

We are family-focused in the truest sense of the word and recognise the value of every single member of our diverse team and the people who support them (both at work and at home) to enable them to be the best they can be.

What inspires us

We offer a multitude of opportunities for all of our people, whether they want to progress and develop or simply do their job to the best of their abilities.

We have implemented a series of impactful initiatives to champion and support health and wellbeing, including mental health, giving employees a greater say in the business, supporting a healthy working lifestyle and provide life-changing experiences. Local champions are shaping awareness programmes for health and wellbeing, and annually we run ‘know your numbers’ workshops to help employees become more aware of the significance of factors like their BMI, blood pressure and physical age so that they can make more informed decisions about their lifestyles.

We demonstrate more fun and engaging approaches to fitness by incorporating activities such as our annual mud run into GEF-FEST, our annual family weekend. And globally, team members can get involved in our corporate Sports Day – typically hosted in one of our European cities – where employees get an opportunity to participate in a diverse mix of events including archery, petanque, basketball, running, cycling and football.

Action highlights

Our approach is that working hard is a given, and in return we offer industry-leading opportunities for self-development and a competitive package. This includes 24 days standard annual leave, a contributory pension scheme where we invest up to 7% into our team members’ pension fund, a bonus linked to performance, life assurance, gym or BUPA membership, salary sacrifice initiatives, an employee car scheme, a day off on their birthday and, for long service, sabbaticals of up to two weeks.

Locally, it’s incredibly important that we help our employees make a difference in areas that matter to them. Recently, this has included fundraising activities for national and local charities, days off to celebrate their birthday with their family or using dedicated community engagement time to help out with a charity of their choice. Our local teams take the lead in organising family fun days, site barbecues, team nights out and regular on-site crepe and coffee vans for team members to try something new.

Word from the top

Three years ago we embarked on a mission to truly transform our UK business. This provided us with an opportunity to take stock of what was working well (and what wasn’t) and allowed us to develop a plan for how we wanted to change things.

Internally, we agreed that our focus would be around how we develop our employee proposition to make GEFCO UK a great place to work to recruit, support and retain the best team possible to meet our business goals.

As a business, we place real emphasis on the relationships we build. We know that people are key to the success of our business. From building client rapport to supporting each other internally in times of need, we partner with the people we interact with across the board to provide an unmatched, personal touch approach to all we do.
