About us

Our History

Marshall was founded in 1909 by Mr D.G. Marshall M.B.E. as a small chauffeur drive company in Cambridge with just two cars on the fleet.

Today we are the 7th largest motor group in the UK. The Group operates 117 franchises representing 24 manufacturing brands in 28 different counties across England. We have a turnover in excess of £2.3bn per annum and currently employ just over 4,000 colleagues.

Our Vision

We have a clear vision “To be the UK’s Premier Automotive Retail Group.” To achieve our vision we have created a customer centric culture, as well as operating as a world class retailer who delivers retailing excellence so that we can be regarded as the employment destination in our sector.

When the strategy was launched, we recognised that our people would be at the heart of our success. As a result, in 2008 we launched our first Great Place to Work® survey to ensure we had independent governance of our colleague engagement measurement. We have been committed to this programme ever since.

Our Values

Everything we do is underpinned by our values which are woven in to the fabric of our business:

• Recognising that people are the heart of our success

• Putting our customers above all else

• Upholding the highest standards of integrity and fairness

• Maintaining competitive edge by innovation and creativity

What employees say

Since joining Marshall in 2013 I’ve had some great career development opportunities. Starting in marketing for the Trade Parts and Aftersales divisions I wanted to progress, but wasn’t sure what direction to go in. I enrolled on to the Marshall Futures Leaders Programme and as a result was promoted to Assistant Trade Parts Manager of our Trade Parts operation in Cambridge. Not many people can say they love their job, but honestly I do and I get to work with a brilliant team! I still want to progress further and know that Marshall will support me with my ongoing career development.

What defines us

Whilst we take our business very seriously having fun at work is a key element to our Great Place to Work ethos. Laughter is good for the soul so we want plenty of it!

As part of our induction, every new colleague goes through our Dignity and Respect Programme which educates people on how to have fun by Creating Camaraderie and Banning the Banter! It’s all about behaving the ‘Marshall’ way.

Camaraderie in the workplace drives engagement and makes work fun for our colleagues and our customers. Teams are encouraged to get involved with fun events so that everyone can let their hair down.

Our #MarshallMoments programme highlights lots of fun and engaging activities, with both colleagues and customers, on social media for everyone to get involved with. It really does make a difference and helps to create a family feel across our business.

What inspires us

Our people inspire us so we are really committed in taking every opportunity we can to celebrate success, outstanding achievement or simply when someone does something special.

In addition to all the localised recognition and celebrations we have a series of central programmes and initiatives to celebrate, inspire and thank colleagues for their contribution to the business.

Our Marshall Achievement, Values and Teamwork Awards, Loyalty Weekend, Work Anniversary Celebration, Apprentice of the Year and Senior Manager Awards are just a few of the programmes we have in place to celebrate and thank our colleagues' outstanding achievements.

What is really significant is each of these programmes have been introduced as a result of colleague feedback since starting the Great Place to Work® programme.

Action highlights

Giving back to the communities in which we serve has been a great way to build a real family feel at Marshall.

We have some chosen charities centrally that we support that are very close to our hearts and hold annual events to support these causes. Our colleagues also get involved with local charities and community projects to ensure they are ‘close to home’ and relevant to the teams and their customers.

We share so many great examples of this local charitable/community work going on across our businesses. This not only recognises and celebrates the individual achievement of colleagues who go the extra mile to help but helps to raise awareness of how important it is to Marshall to give back. We believe giving these great achievements lots of exposure motivates and inspires others to get involved and make a difference.

Word from the top

Our company is steeped in history. From our humble beginnings as a chauffeur company in 1909 with just two cars on the fleet to the £2.3bn turnover motor dealer group we are today.

The common link to every step of our evolution is our fantastic colleagues who live our values every day. They provide a customer experience that sets us apart from our competitors and a working environment that feels like a second home for each other. I am incredibly proud of our people, who are without doubt what makes Marshall a great place to work.

Application tips

We employ people who are self-motivated, customer focused, resilient and who can deliver results. Attitude is a significant factor coupled with a desire to succeed and an ability to learn. Being operationally effective is obviously important but the cultural alignment is critical with each new colleague we recruit in order to support the Marshall brand. Given that all franchised dealerships look the same in terms of corporate identity and product, our colleagues are a significant way we can differentiate ourselves from our competitors and therefore offer something unique and memorable to our customers.

Whilst experience and qualifications are necessary in some roles the most important factor to us is finding people who have the right behaviours and beliefs to keep our values alive.

Our People – can you build effective and trusting working relationships, adopt a ‘one company, one team’ approach and respect differences and diversity?

Our Customers – can you be polite and respectful at all times, listen to our customers and anticipate their needs as well as making sure they have a great experience every time?

Integrity – can you take responsibility for your actions, adopt an unbiased approach to all colleagues, always do what you say you are going to do and be open and honest at all times?

Innovation – are you able to question if a job can be done better or more efficiently, open to change, positive and inspiring and able to look for creative solutions?

Our great workplace

Creating a culture where people feel they can make a difference, deliver great service and enjoy coming to work is our priority.

As a values based business you can enjoy an environment that genuinely cares about people, puts integrity at the forefront of everything we do and is highly innovative, constantly striving to be the best.

If you like the idea of working in a fast moving, exciting and high performance environment with great rewards then Marshall is definitely the place for you. In addition to our day to day business focus we get involved with a wide range of fun events and fundraising activities for charity to give everyone the opportunity to make a difference.

How do we validate we are getting this right? Our annual Great Place to Work survey gives us that regular temperature check to ensure our colleagues have high levels of trust and engagement. Click HERE to see what exciting career opportunities we currently have available.
