About us

Our History

Marshall was founded in 1909 by Mr D.G. Marshall M.B.E. as a small chauffeur drive company in Cambridge with just two cars on the fleet.

Today we are the 7th largest motor group in the UK. The Group operates 106 franchise dealerships representing 23 manufacturing brands in 27 different counties across England. We have a turnover in excess of £2.2bn per annum and currently employ just under 4,000 colleagues.

Our Vision

We have a clear vision “To be the UK’s Premier Automotive Retail Group.” To achieve our vision we have created a customer centric culture, as well as operating as a world class retailer who delivers retailing excellence so that we can be regarded as the employment destination in our sector.

When the strategy was launched, we recognised that our people would be at the heart of our success. As a result, in 2008 we implemented our first Great Place to Work survey to ensure we had independent governance of our colleague engagement measurement. We have been committed to this programme ever since.

What defines us

Whilst we take our business very seriously having fun at work is a key element to our Great Place to Work ethos. Laughter is good for the soul so we want plenty of it!

Every new colleague who starts with Marshall goes through our Dignity and Respect Programme which educates people on how to have fun without it going too far and becoming inappropriate. It’s all about behaving the ‘Marshall’ way!

Camaraderie in the workplace drives engagement and makes work fun for our colleagues and our customers. Teams are encouraged to get involved with fun events so that everyone can let their hair down. As an example, we also see colleagues regularly interacting with our CEO on Twitter particularly about his precious Manchester United!

Our #MarshallMoments programme highlights lots of fun and engaging activities, with both colleagues and customers, on social media for everyone to get involved with. It really does make a difference and helps to create a family feel in each of our businesses.

What inspires us

We are really committed to taking every opportunity we can to celebrate success, outstanding achievement or simply when someone does something special.

In addition to all the localised fun and celebrations we also have a series of central programmes and initiatives to celebrate, inspire and thank colleagues for their contribution to the business.

The MAVTAs, which stands for Marshall Achievement, Values and Teamwork Awards, gives every colleague the opportunity to nominate another colleague in recognition of their demonstration of our values.

We have a Loyalty Programme which celebrates and thanks colleagues who reach certain length of service milestones with a luxury weekend away and gala dinner.

Our Apprentice of the Year Awards gives managers the opportunity to nominate an apprentice for an award based on set criteria including outstanding tutor reports, great attitude, teamwork and delivery of Marshall Values.

We also have an annual Senior Manager Awards ceremony to recognise the outstanding achievements and results our senior team deliver for our business.

These are just a sample of how we celebrate and thank our colleagues outstanding achievements – what is really significant is each of these programmes have been introduced as a result of colleague feedback since starting the Great Place to Work programme.

Giving back to the communities in which we serve has been a great way to build a real family feel at Marshall.

We have some chosen charities centrally that we support that are very close to our hearts and hold annual events to support these causes. Our colleagues also get involved with local charities and community projects to ensure they are ‘close to home’ and relevant to the teams and their customers.

We share so many great examples of this local charitable/community work going on across our businesses. This not only recognises and celebrates the individual achievement of colleagues who go the extra mile to help but helps to raise awareness of how important it is to Marshall to give back. We believe giving these great achievements lots of exposure motivates and inspires others to get involved and make a difference.

Our company is steeped in history. From our humble beginnings as a chauffeur company in 1909 with just two cars on the fleet to the £2.2bn turnover motor dealer group, representing 23 brand partners across England that we are today – an interesting journey!

The common link to every step of our evolution is our fantastic colleagues who live our values every day. It is them who provide a customer experience that sets us apart from our competitors and a working environment that feels like a second home for each other.

Application tips

We employ people who are self-motivated, customer focused, resilient and who can deliver results. Attitude is a significant factor coupled with a desire to succeed and an ability to learn. Being operationally effective is obviously important but the cultural alignment is critical with each new colleague we recruit in order to support the Marshall brand. Given that all franchised dealerships look the same in terms of corporate identity and product, our colleagues are a significant way we can differentiate ourselves from our competitors and therefore offer something unique and memorable to our customers.

Whilst experience and qualifications are necessary in some roles the most important factor to us is finding people who have the right behaviours and beliefs to keep our values alive.
