L'Occitane en Provence

Established in

About us

L’Occitane is very much a company of two parts: it has the warmth, friendliness and support that comes from belonging to a ‘family’ ….as well as the excitement and pace that comes from being part of a dynamic and growing success story. Our company was founded more than 40 years ago, in 1976 by Olivier Baussan, who distilled and sold the Essential Oils of Rosemary and Lavender at the local markets of Provence. It is from these humble beginnings that L’Occitane began its true story: a business that now spans across 5 continents and more than 90 countries, with over 1500 Boutiques and more than 8000 employees. In recent years the L’Occitane Group which already included Melvita, has grown by acquiring other international beauty companies such as Erborian, LimeLife and Elemis. In addition to our delight, these new ventures bring with them a variety of opportunities for further development, networking and sharing of ‘Best Practice’ across the whole business.

L’Occitane is proud to offer premium, natural based beauty products created from the finest ingredients, harvested in the Provence countryside, keeping alive its farming traditions. The name Olivier chose for the Company evokes the land of Occitania – the ancient province that once covered the south of France, north-eastern Spain and northern Italy and which is rich with sensorial and cultural resources. His idea was to mix the traditions and ingredients from these regions in the creation of high quality products for personal care and the home. The name L’OCCITANE comes from the old language of Oc and means: “The woman from Occitania” To correctly pronounce our name we encourage our use the following phonetic guide: LOX - EE – TAN

What employees say

My 1st year at L’Occitane has been amazing. I honestly couldn’t have wished for a better company to work for. Joining the “world of corporate” was so daunting a year ago and I've never felt more welcome. I'm so proud to work for such an amazing brand with incredible values and wonderful people!

At L'Occitane everyone is listened to. The work we do in Provence and around the world with our farmers and suppliers is outstanding. We do so much good as a company.

Promotion opportunities are really good, the organisation trusts and respects loyalty which makes me want to stay and progress in my career in the future.

What defines us

There is a real pursuit and passion for excellence, be it the care and investment in our people, the natural products we grow and use as well as the continued development of our quality skin, bath, body and home products - each beautifully packaged and labelled in Braille for the benefit of the visually impaired, or our pride in delivering outstanding customer service.

What inspires us

Our Associates tells us that they are particularly proud of belonging to a company that ‘gives back’ via the L’Occitane Foundation: the charitable arm of our organisation. First, we play our part in supporting the natural world through supporting projects that preserve, protect and communicate the knowledge and traditions of plants (please see attachment for example). We also support programmes that improve the social and economic conditions of women in West Africa – the home of our award winning Shea Butter – raising funds through sales of a special Solidarity Shea Balm and other related products within our Boutiques, with 100% of profits going towards our chosen charities. In addition, we have partnered with Marie Claire, committing to sell more than 8000 ‘La Flamme’ candles for the benefit of women’s charities and we give our Associates the opportunity to donate via events arranged by our Charity Committee around international ‘Women’s’ Day’. One of the very popular fundraising events we have held this year was a ‘L’OCCI Bake Off’ where Associates submitted photos of their baking efforts to win a fabulous mixer and recipe book for the most impressive cake.

Word from the top

L’Occitane has something special, which lies within the heart of its history, its values and its people. There is a genuine sense of warmth and inclusion where every colleague, supplier and customer is welcomed into our L’Occitane family. Employees are supported and encouraged to develop and grow within the company, offering opportunities (including global assignments) for a long and prosperous career. L’Occitane’s employee survey results show that our employees feel they have a voice, they are listened to and their opinion is respected. In addition, L’Occitane prides itself on doing as much as it can to support the environment, the producers of our natural ingredients, as well as a huge number of charitable organisations including the L’Occitane Foundation. So to summarise again, L’Occitane has something special. A truly great place to work. A place to be proud to work.

Career and jobs

Application tips

We recruit, train, develop and promote purely on the basis of merit and ability. All Company vacancies are advertised internally via the L’Occitane Weekly Bulletin as well as on our Global Vacancy Website which displays all job roles available across the L’Occitane world. Boutique Managers are also encouraged to ensure their vacancies are advertised as appropriate both within their Boutique and in the local community. In the past few years we have also engaged with LinkedIn and Glassdoor to ensure that we can reach as broad a selection of talent as possible. We have recently included a ‘Brand Video’ (link below) on our page to share our culture, vision and values, and we are delighted to have been able to maintain such a high Glassdoor score overall.

In addition, we have an “Refer and Recommend” scheme that allows us to reward Associates for recommending a candidate who is later successfully hired. Last year saw approx. 15% of retail positions filled this way. The importance of Authenticity, Entrepreneurship, Positivity and Team Spirit is highlighted throughout our culture, including within our KPIs plus development programmes, and therefore these are also all amongst the values we seek when recruiting new Associates for L’Occitane.

To ensure a consistent and fair process, the Boutique management teams are all trained in Recruitment and Interviewing as a part of our ‘People First’ development programme (please see Development) and with the support of our central Recruitment team, the relevant Boutique Managers get involved with the process of hiring new talent for the business. To ensure that candidates who are selected for interview will be a match for the business they are asked a mix of standard competency based questions along with questions about their ideals and ambitions, as well as being given an opportunity to demonstrate how they might approach and serve L’Occitane customers.
