About us

We're a leading law firm working around the globe.

We work in major sectors including energy, financial services, life sciences, natural resources, infrastructure, real estate and technology. You'll find us in the UK and Europe, Canada and the Middle East and Asia.

We're different to other law firms. What sets us apart is our growing reputation for client experience, outstanding people and creative energy. We’re also growing our footprint and capability in the international legal market, making bold moves and gathering momentum.

Our people are our power. Leading organisations from around the world come to us for advice and assistance. This makes for challenging assignments. But we can handle them. It’s partly because of the innovative work processes and business systems we use to complete these assignments. But, above all, it’s because we've got some of the best legal brains and business professionals in our team. We trust people and respect what makes them different. And by empowering our people to be successful, we also help our clients and our own business.

What employees say

What makes Gowling WLG different to other firms?

The firm has an ambitious and driven culture – which is important in the ever-more competitive legal market. The client base in the Specialist Real Estate Services team is of the highest order and unmatched by all but a select few of our competitors. The firm is keen to encourage personal growth, side by side with growth of the business. Fee earners are encouraged to take greater interest in the details of the clients' business, which makes the difference between good and excellent service; to be more commercial and to take those skills to the marketplace to help grow the business. These efforts are rewarded and the firm operates personal development programmes at all levels, encompassing everything from technical seminars and workshops to personal development plans and objectives to help employees progress in their careers.

What's the most surprising thing you've learned about working here?

For me, the firm's friendly and collegiate environment sets it apart from many of its competitors. Notwithstanding the size of the business, post the combination with Gowlings and the drive to evolve the client and service internationally, the firm has a friendly and inclusive environment. In addition, the firm rewards hard work and commitment.

What defines us

Our values are:

The power of teamwork - We believe we can achieve much more if we work together as a team with our clients and colleagues – however talented we are as individuals. We collaborate across services, sectors and offices – in an environment of respect, trust and openness. We focus on the greater good for the client and the firm.

We all bring something different - We all bring different backgrounds, strengths and perspectives to the team. The diversity and openness makes us more relevant to our clients. We are inclusive – embracing each other's ideas and contributions.

Always striving to be better - We are always striving to improve our service to clients and the way we run our own business – ambitious to improve in a highly competitive market. We are curious about new possibilities, connections and ideas – and we have the confidence, creativity and energy to make them happen.

These values influence and guide everything that we do.

  • A range of health and wellbeing programmes.

All of the firm’s internal communications support our vision and values, celebrating stories that showcase our people, our values and our strategic development.

People can nominate individuals or a team for an 'extra mile' award in recognition of their exceptional hard work and/or contribution to the business. Each month the nominations are assessed and the leading individuals receive an award of champagne or vouchers.

Action highlights

It's always helpful to secure rankings like Best Workplace™ but the main reason we participate is so that our people can directly influence our priorities. As soon as we have the data and feedback we gather our Board to review where we can improve, which then shapes our people and talent plans for the following 12 months.

As a direct result of the data and feedback we have received from the survey, we have implemented the following:

  • Agile working for all employees
  • Reverse mentoring for our Board
  • Mental Health Awareness Training
  • Introduction of Development Centres
  • Launched International Secondment Programme
  • Launched Management Development Programme for Senior Manager

Application tips

There are a wide variety of roles in our legal and business services teams, all completely different. That's why each individual role has its own requirements, but what unites them all is we are looking for individuals who want to work in a culture where people are a priority.

Each role also has its own application process. You'll always start by sending an application form. But from there, depending on what you’re applying for, we might ask you to: answer technical questions, work through real life case studies, answer competency based questions, deliver a presentation, complete psychometric tests or meet the team informally. Whatever the process, our resourcing team will be on hand to give you plenty of advice and support.
