About us

Alnylam is leading the translation of RNA interference (RNAi) - an approach also known as 'gene silencing' - into a whole new class of innovative medicines with the potential to transform the lives of patients who have limited or inadequate treatment options. Based on Nobel Prize-winning science, RNAi therapeutics represent a powerful, clinically validated approach for the treatment of a wide range of debilitating diseases with high unmet medical need.

Alnylam was founded in Cambridge, Massechusetts in 2002 on a bold vision to turn scientific possibility into reality, which is now marked by its robust discovery platform and deep pipeline of investigational medicines, including 4 programs in late-stage clinical development.

Our Name derives from 'Alnilam', the centre star in Orien's Belt which shines the brightest of them all. It is also the Arabic word for 'String of Pearls'.

Our vision is to harness a revolution in biology for human health. This vision creates the common goal for all employees to turn our passion for helping patients into concrete actions by leveraging the strength of all. Our values guide who we are, what we recognise, what we value and that serve as the foundation of our culture:

- Passion for Excellence

- Innovation & Discovery

- Commitment to People

- Open Culture

- Sense of Urgency

What employees say

I feel so proud to work here. The values people work by and the way we celebrate (from desk drops for Halloween to big team-side successes). Leaders communicate with us on business issues and also on humanitarian issues where they show support for employees who may have loved ones in countries where there's been a disaster or talking to us about our environment concerns. This makes me feel that I am part of a really caring organisation.

What defines us

The patient is at the heart of everything we do and this drives our employees to strive to go above and beyond to help us achieve our extremely ambitious goals. We are committed to supporting the global rare disease community and the patient organizations in the therapeutic areas we focus on.

To recognise this commitment we communicate regularly with employees sharing business updates, welcoming new hires, and celebrating our successes. We do this at monthly UK and regional Town Halls plus quarterly All Company Meetings where we hear from directly from our CEO. In addition we hold an Annual Regional Offsite Meeting bringing all of our employees from the region together. Our most recent meeting was held in April in Vienna and gave employees a fantastic opportunity to hear from our leaders in person and generally get to spend time together in a relaxed and informal environment. These events are always a great opportunity for us to also hear directly from patients to understand more about how the disease is affecting  them and those who care for them, and what our medicine is doing to help them.

We want to provide employees with an engaging place to work with our values always at the core of this. As well as creating a culture that is open, honest and non-hierarchical we celebrate events that are important to us including Rare Disease Day, International Women’s Day as well as raising money for charities that are important to our people, often using our Month End social meetings to do this.

What inspires us

It's important at Alnylam to celebrate success and give our employees an opportunity to get together outside of the office.  Whether that's an informal dinner at a local restaurant, organised by employees for employees, or annual company events such as Family Day where we get to know our employees' families and thank them for their support, the annual Christmas Party or the Summer Fun Day which gives employees the chance to spend time together in a really informal environment.  Our Social Committee is key to organising these annual events and we couldn't get them off the ground without the employees who volunteer to be part of this team.

Alynlam supports a number of charities and, every year, we chose a specific charity to benefit from the money raised at our Silent Auction.  Thanks to the amazing donations from our employees, and their generosity in bidding for these gifts, we raised in excess of $70,000 in December.

As well as fun events organised for employees to get together we're also keen to give something back to our local community through our Helping Hands Community Service Day; this is a global initiative that the UK team enthusiastically supported in July with the local Wildlife Trust.

Word from the top

It's integral to how Alnylam operates that we treat each employee as an individual, understanding that they each have different needs.  As an organization, and for me as a leader, we do everything we can to ensure every employee knows how much their individual contributions are valued by us, both in terms of the impact on the lives of the patients we serve, and to the success of Alnylam
